So, the Public Switched Telephone Network’s (PSTN) final switch off has been extended to January 2027. This means that businesses don’t have to think about preparations yet, right? Not necessarily. Whilst the extension does offer more flexibility, it doesn’t mean that businesses should put off starting the transition process. Here, Nathan Charles, our Head of Customer Experience, urges UK businesses not to fall into a false sense of security after the extension and explains what consequences could accompany a late switch.
PSTN has been connecting calls and transmitting the UK’s data for decades. From alarm systems to payment terminals, this copper-based network has been integral to the UK’s connectivity. However, the aging PSTN has become prone to failures, with OFCOM reporting a 45 per cent increase in the number of significant PSTN resilience incidents in 2024. These failures come down to a lack of parts like relays, connectors and switches, leaving PSTN’s hardware incapable of sustaining modern network demands.
In response to these issues, telecoms giants like BT and Vodaphone lead an upgrade to fully digital telecommunication which will conclude the UK’s use of analogue infrastructure. The upgrade to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), will fix part discontinuance concerns and stands out by converting voice into digital signals for internet-based calls.
In addition to the technical benefits, the digital transition allows for greater business agility. Faster internet-based communication means employees can collaborate seamlessly regardless of location, which is especially crucial as remote work becomes more common.
Securing the benefits of digital, like faster data transmission or reduced maintenance costs can be done with peace of mind if businesses take action to prepare ahead of time, even with the 2027 extension.
For example, if a business chooses not to make the switch on time, critical systems like alarms, lifts and phone systems would shut down and require last minute upgrades to fix the problem.
For any business, this sort of downtime results in substantial losses and would take longer to resolve. Even with the extra time, the transition process should be thorough, considering company size and the complexity of its systems. However, if businesses use the extension to facilitate a smooth transition to digital, they can prevent last minute downtime and avoid higher upgrade costs.
