From first-line support to managed services: Reece’s Story

Written by OryxAlign | Jun 24, 2026

Reece’s story highlights how practical experience can lay the foundation for long-term career growth in IT. From internships and first-line support to tackling more complex client issues, he’s grown both technically and professionally since joining OryxAlign.

Based in our Cape Town office, Reece shares what he’s learned along the way and what working in a collaborative, growth-focused environment really feels like.

What type of roles did you do before OryxAlign?

Before OryxAlign, I started out in an internship through a learnership programme, working in first-line support. I was troubleshooting hardware and software issues, managing user accounts and getting hands-on experience with tools like Active Directory. Most of my learning came from real situations such as through ticketing systems, emails and phone support.

It was my first role after leaving school, and it really sparked my interest in IT. From there, I kept building my knowledge, eventually joining SDT before it became part of OryxAlign.

What's your role at OryxAlign, and how would you describe what you do in one sentence?

I’m a service desk engineer and part of the managed services team, so I handle a wide range of technical challenges for our clients and support the team with troubleshooting and escalations.

How long have you been with the company, and what initially attracted you to join?

I’ve been with OryxAlign for around a year now since the acquisition, and what really drew me in was the opportunity to grow technically and work with a wider range of systems. I was also excited to be part of a bigger team, as there were only five of us in SDT and there’s nearly 30 in the same team now!

What's one thing that surprised you, in a good way, once you started working here?

I was surprised by how friendly and collaborative everyone is. Even when I’m coming across something new or don’t have all the answers, there’s always someone willing to jump in and help. The knowledge-sharing culture here is incredible.

What kind of progress or growth have you experienced during your time here, professionally or personally?

I’ve grown a lot technically, strengthened my troubleshooting skills and have become more confident in handling escalated issues. I’ve also tackled problems I wouldn’t have faced at my previous roles, which has helped me learn and push myself further. On a personal level, it’s given me confidence to take on challenges I didn’t think I could.

What do you enjoy the most about working here?

I love the variety. No two days are the same, and there’s always something new to learn. Grasping those problems and solving them is fulfilling, and so that keeps things interesting. Our Cape Town office also a great space for collaboration and just being around the team day-to-day.

What's one way you feel supported - by your team, manager or the wider organisation?

I feel supported through strong knowledge sharing and having access to experienced colleagues who are always willing to help. They're familiar with complex issues that I might not know, and my manager is also very approachable and supportive, always willing to listen and assist if I need any help.

How would you describe the company culture to someone considering joining?

It’s supportive, collaborative, and growth focused. There’s a real emphasis on continuous learning and improvement, and you’re encouraged to take on challenges that stretch your skills.

What's one way OryxAlign supports your learning and development?

I really value the exposure to different technologies and environments as it’s helped me tackle challenges I couldn’t have dealt with before. I’ve also started using the Udemy licence recently to prepare for an exam, and it’s been a fantastic resource for learning at my own pace.

Reece’s journey shows how the right environment and supportive colleagues can make a real difference to your growth, both professionally and personally.
